We are thrilled to present you a collaboration between contemporary artists Eli Sudbrack and Christophe Hamaide Pierson of Assume Vivid Astro Focus, Tom of Finland Foundation and Print All Over Me in the creation of an exclusive, unprecedented apparel collection and platform that invites viewers and customers to become active participants in the design process.
AVAF was given access to the complete Tom of Finland archive to morph his body of work with their visual language and codes. The result is a stunning and euphoric coalition between artists that although differ in terms of generation, backgrounds and aesthetic discourse, are protagonists of underground art and share the means of alternative platforms to celebrate and advocate for sexual freedom and tolerance in the spirit of inclusion without conclusion.
This collection is a seamless continuation of AVAF’s application of cultural references and artifacts as participants in their work, and is the most vivid adaptation of the Finnish artist’s drawings to date, set to add a “multisensory splash and color overdrive” to the rainbow of Tom’s Men. This is the first collaboration in an ongoing series of capsule collections Print All Over Me is initiating with prominent contemporary artists. The collection features 27 unisex pieces, including designs exclusive to this project, such as the classic motorcycle jacket, muscle tank, short shorts and even a prideful flag. Each order is inevitably unique, and is specially made through PAOM’s unexampled standards or production and distribution.
In line with AVAF’s ethos of engaging viewers with their work, PAOM’s customers become co-creators, and will be able to select from fifty visually explosive AVAF X Tom of Finland components to virtually create custom compositions and arrangements of endless possibilities to be applied onto set apparel designs. This collaboration also marks the debut of a special feature that will allow for visitors to engage with AVAF-configured environments, and will serve as a backdrop to a genderless and social media applicable avatar.
In parallel with the apparel, a limited edition print of the AVAF X Tom of Finland artwork will be available exclusively through Artspace, the world’s premiere online destination for contemporary art. By introducing this new series of work simultaneously on paper and commercial goods, this project further blurs the distinction and values attributed to a media. Artspace intends to add additional prints from this series over time.
Assume Vivid Astro Focus works in a vast array of media, including painting, drawing, installations, video, sculpture, neons, wallpaper and decals. Personal expression and a lust for life are prominently emphasized in projects that are simultaneously rooted in politics of free speech, civil rights, classifications of class, gender and national identity. Infused by pop culture and political references, AVAF is influenced by multiple sources and visual traits from art, culture, politics, sociology, fashion and music, creating stunning and visually explosive mash-ups of transformed and re-contextualized references with their core beliefs as foundation: “share, generosity, contaminate, be contaminated, devour, be devoured, travel and spread”.
In 1984, the nonprofit Tom of Finland Foundation was established by Durk Dehner and Touko Laaksonen. As Tom had established worldwide recognition as the master of homo-erotic art, the Foundation’s original purpose was to preserve his vast catalog of work. Several years later the scope was widened to offer a safe haven for all art in response to rampant discrimination against work that portrayed sexual behavior or generated a sexual response. Today the Foundation continues in its efforts of educating the public as to the cultural merits of erotic art and in promoting healthier, more tolerant attitudes about sexuality.
Print All Over Me is an online platform for collaboration and clothing customization. The company provides tools that allow anyone to create, share, own, and produce clothing by uploading artwork that can be applied to seasonal collections. As a technology for collaboration, PAOM has worked with artists like Chris Ofili and K-Hole, and companies like Diane Von Furstenberg and Tumblr.
